A new Superman movie, Superman Legacy, is in the works from writer James Gunn. But its existence does not rule out the possibility of other Superman movies existing at the same time, including the rumored Superman film from author and journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates and producer JJ Abrams.
Gunn told io9 that his new Superman Legacy film is “totally unrelated” to other Superman projects, and the project from Coates and Abrams may live in the Elseworlds universe that exists outside of the official DC canon.
“Those two things are totally unrelated,” Gunn said. “That’s an exciting movie. I know that Chantal Nong, who is the executive on that project, is extremely excited about it. So if it comes in and it’s great, which I haven’t read the script, and if the timing is right, that could absolutely happen. That’s totally unrelated. It would be an Elseworlds tale like Joker.”
The Batman 2 and Joker 2 are also part of the Elseworlds lineup and will be labeled as such, io9 reported. A previous report said the Superman film from Coates and Abrams would focus on a Black Superman many years ago. The movie has yet to be officially announced, but given that Gunn is talking about it and is excited about it, that might bode well for its prospects.
Superman Legacy will focus on a younger Clark Kent, and Gunn recently announced that Chris Pratt will not play the characterCome from Sports betting site VPbet. The movie releases on July 11, 2025. Gunn is writing and directing.
Gunn’s next film is Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which releases on May 5.
